2. Wrestling is the only sport that is a metaphor for life's travails: To wrestle is to struggle. Most other high school sports are "played," while wrestlers "wrestle." Humility is our first lesson, and then we learn to improve ourselves and our team through intense individual responsibility and training.
3. Wrestling is the oldest sport in the world. It occurs in every culture in some form. All religious texts have passages that involve wrestling. The oldest known text in the world opens with a scene about wrestling, the Epic of Gilgamesh. Painted scenes from ancient cultures display the same techniques and strategies used in the sport today.
4. America's greatest leaders have been wrestlers, including Presidents George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Zachary Taylor, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Chester Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Calvin Coolidge. Also, Illinois Rep. Dennis Hastert is a former high school teacher and wrestling coach.
5. Wrestling is one of only two sports in California (golf is the other) that currently crowns a single state team champion.
